Maximum length of 7 metres.

Body is rusty brown to slate grey with a white, stubby head.

Skin often has small, white, circular and linear scars.

Adults males may have visible protruding teeth on the front of their lower jaw, which extend beyond the upper jaw.

Dorsal fin is small, curved, and located 2/3 of the way down the back.

Extremely deep divers; may stay submerged for over 2 hours at a time,

May fluke in preparation for a long dive.

Usually spotted in small groups of 3-4 animals.

Rarely spotted in British Columbia and their seasonality and distribution in this region is poorly understood.
