Cuvier's beaked whale

Ziphius cavirostris

Description

  • Maximum length of 7 metres.

  • Body is rusty brown to slate grey with a white, stubby head.

  • Skin often has small, white, circular and linear scars.

  • Adults males may have visible protruding teeth on the front of their lower jaw, which extend beyond the upper jaw.

  • Dorsal fin is small, curved, and located 2/3 of the way down the back.

Comportement

  • Extremely deep divers; may stay submerged for over 2 hours at a time,

  • May fluke in preparation for a long dive.

  • Usually spotted in small groups of 3-4 animals.

Distribution

  • Rarely spotted in British Columbia and their seasonality and distribution in this region is poorly understood.
