If you observe an injured, distressed, entangled or dead marine mammal or an incident of human-caused marine mammal disturbance in British Columbia, call the Marine Mammal Incident Reporting Hotline immediately at:

1-800-465-4336 or VHF Channel 16 (Canada)

In the United States, contact the NOAA Fisheries Entanglement Reporting Hotline at:

1-877-767-9425 (USA)

WHAT TO REPORT:

· Your name, vessel name, and contact information

· Species

· Date and time

· Location (latitude/longitude coordinates if possible)

· Animal alive/dead

· Nature of injury or distress

· Pictures/video taken

· Direction of animal's travel

SAFETY: Do not approach or attempt to assist marine mammals in distress. Wild animals can be extremely dangerous and may carry pathogens that can pass to humans. Rescue attempts should only be attempted by trained professionals.

ENTANGLEMENT: Do not remove any fishing gear or rope that may be trailing from the animal. Anchored animals are easier to find, and long trailing gear is helpful to the trained response team to grapple and attach telemetry gear for a better chance at complete disentanglement. If possible, standby the entangled animal at a safe distance until trained responders arrive. Take photos and video of the entanglement from a safe distance. To learn how to properly report and document entangled animals to assist trained responders, download the Mariner's Guide to Reporting Whale Entanglements in Western Canada.
