Harbour porpoise

Description

  • Dark grey-brown back with a lighter belly and speckled greyish-white flanks.

  • The lighter sections are not usually seen when surfacing.

  • Body is chunky with small flippers, and face does not have a prominent beak.

  • Dorsal fin is triangular, blunt, and uniformly grey. Maximum length of 2 metres.

Behaviour

  • Usually slow moving.

  • Group size is usually small ranging from 1-4 animals, however larger seasonal aggregations occur.

  • Not surface active: rarely leap clear of the water or ride the bow wake of boats.

Distribution

  • Found throughout British Columbia's waters.

  • Most common in shallow, nearshore areas, however they may be found in deeper water.

  • Year-round resident.

Notes

  • Hybridization between Dall’s porpoise and harbour porpoise occurs occasionally in BC waters with harbour porpoise as the paternal parent and Dall’s porpoise as the maternal parent. Hybrids tend to appear more similar to Dall’s porpoise in body shape, diving characteristics and behaviour, but they lack the white side patches and the colouring is more similar to the harbour porpoise.
